Site Check browser extension
Site Check by Technophobia is a Chrome extension that checks a website for broken links, meta data, accessibility and speed. This section explains what it does with data.
What stays in your browser
- The check runs in your own browser. The pages of the site you are checking are read by the extension on your computer and are not sent to us.
- Reports, your settings, and (if you add one) your own Google PageSpeed API key are stored in your browser’s local extension storage. We cannot see them. Removing the extension deletes them.
- The extension has no account, no analytics and no advertising trackers.
What is sent, and to whom
- To the site you are checking, and sites it links to: ordinary web requests, the same as visiting those pages, so that links and images can be tested. Links to other websites are only tested if you tick that option.
- To our speed service (sitecheck.technophobia.uk), only when a speed test runs: the address of the page being tested, whether the test is for mobile or desktop, the extension version, and a random install ID. The install ID is a random string created by the extension. It contains no personal information and is used only to apply the daily limit on free speed tests.
- To Google PageSpeed Insights, only when a speed test runs: the address of the page being tested. Our service passes this to Google to run the test. If you have added your own Google API key, the extension sends the request to Google directly. If our service is unavailable, the extension may also send the request to Google directly. Google’s privacy policy applies to that processing.
What our speed service keeps
- A log line for each speed test: the time, the domain name of the page tested (never the full address), mobile or desktop, the install ID and the extension version. These logs are deleted automatically after 30 days. Copies may remain in server backups for up to a further 21 days.
- Your IP address is used to apply a daily limit. It is stored only as a salted hash, never in readable form, and the hashes are deleted at the end of each day.
- Speed test results are cached for up to 6 hours so that repeat tests of the same page are quicker.
Legal basis and sharing
We process this limited data on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing the speed test and preventing abuse of it. We do not sell it, do not use it for advertising, and share it with nobody except Google as described above.

While a check runs, the report shows a panel about Technophobia’s services. If you click a link in it, you arrive at technophobia.uk with a tag in the address showing you came from Site Check. Nothing is sent unless you click.
