A beloved local institution, online

Mawsons Ice Cream Parlour has been serving Seascale and the wider West Cumbrian coast since 2009. The business is genuinely distinctive — not a franchise, not a chain. Homemade Italian-style gelato made fresh daily from the milk and cream of their own herd of cows. A family business with real farm provenance, sat in a village many of its customers travel specifically to visit. The website had to do the work of convincing people the journey is worth it — and to show, in real time, whether the parlour was busy enough to bother making the drive.

Live CCTV stream on the home page

Real-time exterior camera feed of the parlour on Drigg Road, Seascale — click "Start Livestream" and see for yourself.

Dedicated on-site computer

Whamos physically installed a streaming machine at the parlour, configured for the camera feed, with a custom auto-start script.

Auto-restart resilience

If the machine reboots — power cut, update, anything — the stream comes back online automatically. The Mawsons team do not have to remember to start it.

Photography-led design

The product looks as good as it tastes. Gallery and Our Delights pages showcase the sundaes, waffles, and homemade bakes as a sales tool in their own right.

Family business story front and centre

Own herd of cows, traditional Italian recipes, since 2009 — the provenance content that makes a destination parlour worth the journey.

Destination hospitality

Earning the trip people make to visit

A high-street ice cream shop in a busy town has passing trade. A destination parlour in a village many of its customers travel specifically to visit does not — every customer is making an active decision to come. The website job is to make that decision easy: yes the journey is worth it, yes the product is what they say it is, and right now this minute is the parlour open and not too quiet (or not too busy)? The live CCTV stream addresses that last question directly.

Simplify Reservations

Flexible booking tools and availability management.

Support Visitors Instantly

Smart conversations directly through your website.

Built Around Your Business

Tailored systems designed for the way you work.

The streaming setup is more than a software integration. It required Technophobia to physically install a dedicated machine on-site at the Mawsons premises, configured specifically to handle the stream and resilient against the kinds of interruptions that affect any real-world site — power cuts, system updates, manual restarts.

Software plus hardware

The machine runs a custom auto-start script that launches the streaming service automatically on every boot, so the stream comes back without intervention from the Mawsons team. The website end is a straightforward embed with a Start Livestream activation button.

Live stream

See the parlour before you set off

The live feed is embedded on the home page with a Start Livestream button that activates the camera view — showing the exterior of the parlour building on Drigg Road in Seascale in real time. For a business in a village that many of its customers travel to specifically, that visibility — am I going to find a queue at the door, or is now a quiet moment to drop in — is genuinely useful. It also signals confidence: a parlour willing to put a live camera on its front of building has nothing to hide.

The site is photography-led throughout because Mawsons product genuinely looks as good as it tastes. Gallery pages showcase the sundaes, the specialty creations, the waffles with gelato, the homemade bakes from the kitchen alongside the ice cream.

Photography-led, because the product earns it

The product is the sales tool — the design treats it that way rather than burying it under marketing language.

Real provenance

Farm story on every page

The Mawsons story — own herd of cows, daily fresh production, traditional Italian-style recipes, serving Seascale and the West Cumbrian coast since 2009 — runs through the whole site, not just an About page. The provenance is what differentiates the business from chains and supermarket alternatives, and the website treats it as core copy, not a footnote.

Hospitality clients sometimes need physical infrastructure to make the digital side work. The Mawsons install is a good example — the website feature is software, but the dependable streaming behind it required Technophobia to physically install and configure a machine on-site.

Hardware installs are part of what we do

That kind of work is part of our offer for hospitality and retail clients who need their digital systems backed by real, sustainable, low-maintenance hardware.

FAQs

Yes. The Mawsons live stream needed to be reliable enough to survive power cuts and reboots without staff intervention, so the streaming runs on a dedicated machine installed at the parlour with a custom auto-start script. Software-only solutions wouldn't have held up in a real hospitality environment.

Yes, but on-site hardware installs do add travel cost and lead time. Locally in West Cumbria we can usually be on site within days. Further afield we'll quote the install as part of the build, and the auto-start scripting means we don't need ongoing visits once the machine is up.

Live cameras are one example; the same approach applies to other hardware features. Digital signage, kitchen display screens, ordering kiosks, custom till integrations. If your hospitality business has a non-standard physical feature that needs reliable software behind it, that's the kind of work this case study represents.

You can provide it, or we can arrange a shoot. For destination hospitality the photography genuinely matters — the product is the sales tool. We'll quote the photography as a line item separate from the build if you'd like us to handle it.

The website itself is in our standard web design tiers — Silver from £2,500, Gold from £5,000, Platinum from £7,500, all plus VAT. Hardware installs (computers, cameras, configuration, on-site work) are quoted separately at £75 plus VAT per hour after a discovery call.

Yes — that is exactly what the auto-start script is for. When the machine boots, the streaming service launches automatically. We tested this against deliberate reboots, power interruptions, and update cycles before signing the install off.

Running a hospitality business with a story to tell and provenance to show? Let's talk about a website that earns the trip people make to visit you.
