Environmental Policy

Last updated: 14 September 2025

Technophobia Ltd aims to cut environmental impacts from our operations and the services we deliver. We follow UK law and good practice. This policy applies to staff, contractors, and suppliers.

1. Scope and responsibilities
  • Scope: UK office, remote work, business travel, hosting, cloud, procurement, and waste from our services.
  • Director: owns this policy and approves targets.
  • Project leads: apply this policy on engagements and brief clients on options.
  • All personnel: follow the actions in this policy.
2. Our main impacts
AreaTypical impact
EnergyElectricity for devices and hosting
TravelEmissions from rail, road, and occasional flights
Cloud & dataCompute, storage, and network use
EquipmentLaptops, peripherals, and e-waste
ProcurementEmbodied carbon in goods and services

We track impacts across Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (energy), and relevant Scope 3 (travel, purchased goods, cloud).

3. Measurement and targets
  • Measure our footprint each year and keep a short record.
  • Set year-on-year reduction goals and publish actions for the current year.
  • Prioritise actual reductions. Use high-quality carbon credits only for residual emissions if needed; do not claim “carbon neutral”.
4. Day-to-day actions
  • Use renewable electricity at offices where we control the tariff, or request it from the landlord.
  • Enable device power saving and auto-sleep. Shut lids and power down when not in use.
  • Buy refurbished or verified efficient devices where practical. Extend device life before replacing.
  • Choose UK/EU suppliers and shipping options with lower impact when cost and quality are comparable.
5. Digital design and hosting
  • Prefer hosts that use renewable energy or match usage with renewables. Use UK/EU regions where suitable.
  • Right-size servers and containers. Remove idle resources, old snapshots, and unused images.
  • Set caching, compression, and CDNs. Minimise page weight and third-party scripts.
  • Use efficient image formats (e.g., WebP/AVIF), lazy loading, and media dimension attributes.
  • Log and review heavy cron jobs and workflows. Batch and back-off to cut wasteful runs.
6. Procurement and suppliers
  • Ask key suppliers about energy source, data location, and retention options.
  • Prefer vendors with clear sustainability information and short default retention.
  • Add environmental expectations to contracts where proportionate.
7. Waste and equipment
  • Apply WEEE rules for e-waste. Use certified recyclers and provide destruction certificates where available.
  • Wipe data securely before disposal or resale.
  • Reduce single-use items. Reuse packaging or choose recyclable options.
8. Travel
  • Default to remote meetings. Travel only when it adds clear value.
  • Choose rail over air for UK trips where practical. Car share or use EV/hybrid where possible.
  • If flights are unavoidable, combine meetings to reduce trips.
9. Training and engagement
  • Brief new starters on this policy and day-to-day actions.
  • Share annual goals and results with the team.
